Proclaimed in 1959, Queensland's Cooktown Orchid (Dendrobium bigibbum) is one of Australia's nine magnificent floral emblems. Often regarded as the Australia's most colourful and popular orchid species, it was first collected on a small island north east of Cape York and sent to London, where it was described and named in 1852 by John Lindley, a colleague of Sir Joseph Banks. It thrives in high temperatures and its flowers can vary from white to deep purple.
