One of Australia's best known wildflowers, the striking Sturt Pea (Swainsona formosa) is one of Australia's nine magnificent floral emblems. Famous for its distinctive blood-red leaf-like flowers, the floral emblem of South Australia, the Sturt Pea was first collected by seafarer William Dampier from Rosemary Island in the Dampier Archipelago off the coast of Western Australia in 1699. The original specimen is held at the Sherardian Herbarium in Oxford, England.
