The Sturt's Desert Rose (Gossypium sturtianum) is one of Australia's nine magnificent floral emblems, representing the Northern Territory. This pretty flower of striking colour was named in honour of Captain Charles Sturt, who was the first to collect this species in the creek beds of the Barrier Rangers during 1844-45 exploration of central Australia. This plant belongs to the same genus as commercial cotton and is sometimes also known as Australian Cotton.
